PACS – What the PACS is used for

Around the world, technology is becoming more advanced. Today, technology is a big part of our everyday lives and it is found almost everywhere, including many hospitals. In many countries, a PACS system or picture archiving communication system is used by hospitals to allow for images to be recorded and scanned. The pictures and images are then used by doctors and medical staff to assess and assist the patients in their recovery. It is common to find various types of PACS systems located in hospitals, since the hospitals need to archive medical information for future reference.

A picture archiving communication system is a system that combines several components ranging from computers, to image scanners and whole scanning systems that together form the medical archiving system used in the hospital. When a patient is in the hospital and has a scan or some kind of imagery taken, such imagery is stored in the patients’ medical archive and can be used for reference not only by the hospital but also by other hospitals which are granted access to the medical archive.

There are several main areas where the picture archiving system is used, including for x-ray scanning, ultrasounds and even computed tomographs and MRIs. These picture archiving systems are often referred to as the radiology information systems of the hospital. The hospital system has to keep track of many different processes and patients on a daily basis, which can cause problems for retrieving information. Since the late 1980s, the Pacs system has allowed hospitals to be able to manage their imagery and information more securely and accurately. This does come with its fair share of challenges, including the cost of integration. Most picture archiving and communication systems allow for collaboration on digital images and the medical staff can access the right information within the shortest possible time.

The PACS is actually a network of systems that are integrated to provide a holistic solution for the hospital. The key parts include imaging systems such as the x-ray machines, the CR and MRI as well as ultrasound machines. These are connected to an archiving system that provides storage and client access to the digitally stored image files. Developing and installing picture archiving communication systems can take some time because of the sheer size and infrastructure of the entire system that needs to be set up. There are a number of key advantages that the system will bring to the hospital including efficiency and productivity.
