Each state has a different labor law poster. So how are New York labor law posters different from Arizona labor law posters? America has different rules and regulations on state and federal levels. While federal laws apply to all states, certain state laws can be different from them. For example, all states must state their minimum wage on its posters, but the amount will be different from state to state.

So basically, every labor law poster consists of the same parts. Every employer must display safety and health laws, anti-discrimination laws, equal opportunity hiring laws, disability, compensation laws and many more mandatory notifications. Every poster should also have contact information which employees can use if they need additional information regarding the labor laws. While these are mandatory posters, some businesses need other posters which are specifically designed for the type of work they do. Although the basic layout and content is the same with every state, there will be key differences in different states.

For example, Texas labor law posters will state a different minimum wage and different payday rules the employer has to follow. It is mandatory that all the employees understand what the posters say, so they will be mandatory in Spanish as well with most companies. Compensation programs, freedom of speech, family medical leave and many more will be very different when displayed on Texas labor law posters than in other states.

On the other hand, Arizona labor law poster will have little different requirements. Arizona general posting requirements would also include constructive discharge, no smoking posters, e-verify, right to work and work exposure to bodily fluids. New York labor law posters will also include fringe benefits, time allowed to vote, deduction from wages and tip appropriation.

These are just general posting requirements based on state laws, but every state is obligated to provide the basic information about its laws and federal laws to any worker. Failing to display a poster or updating one result in heavy fees set by both federal and state laws. So even if a company based in New York has a New York labor law poster and safety posters, if they fail to display the federal law poster, they can still be fined up to $17,000. A state provides its own penalties and these can be very uncomfortable, since employees retain the life-time opportunity to sue you whenever they want. Even if they quit, they can sue you years later. It is not a wise choice to omit these posters, but they should be displayed in accordance with both local and federal laws.
